I really don’t know what I’m doing with those rankings now. A month into the season, and a third of the way through several series, and I still don’t have a clue what the order really is.
Shingeki! Kyojin Chuugakkou became the second drop of the season. It felt far too incongruous to me – well beyond the realm of parody and into the land of original story with completely original characters that have a very slight resemblence to the characters from Attack on Titan, which resides mostly in their appearance. The result being something that felt incongruous, and given that even taken as its own separate story it didn’t seem worth watching, I decided to drop it.
Something which (to my slight surprise) I didn’t drop, is Shomin Sample. I’m not a fan of the typical ojou-sama character type, so the idea of this was about as unappealing as they come without being not worth the bother. Yet of the characters introduced so far, I only dislike one of them, which is something I have been okay with before and can be again. The humour is pretty decent, too, though I can’t help but look beyond the comedy and think about the actual implications of what is going on… which only serves to make the series more interesting still. So yes, this is a definite keep. For now, at least. Episode 2 should be available for free users by now but this is Animax so it isn’t.
The other series on Animax that I started this week was Dance with Devils. I’m not so confident on this one but it made a reasonable enough start. Is this some sort of musical? I’ll be trying out Heavy Object and starting season 2 of Noragami over the next few days so I can get ep 1 while they’re still free. Valkyrie Drive episode 2 went up for free but not episode 1, in true Animax style, so I’m leaving that for now. I might get a month’s subscription later in the season if I’m still following stuff on there then and if so I’ll watch the series then.
I also started Taimadou Gakuen 35 Shiken Shoutai this week, which is on Crunchyroll. Which feels like a shame. You can tell that the series is a great one. Good enough that it could be runaway AOTS material (and possibly even a contender for AOTY) if the anime adaptation was done well. Which it isn’t. This is one of the most obviously rushed series I’ve ever come across. And it’s pretty obvious that some of the stuff that is being skipped over is important as well, not necessarily for the overarching plot as for the characterisation and… well, for the context of other conversations that are left in the story, orphaned into appearing to make little sense. I’ve half a mind to just drop this and get the light novels, although the series itself is enjoyable despite the massive flaws. Either way I’m pretty sure that I’ll be buying this series in my next order, so long as its available. So I guess the anime has done its job for me… It’s just a shame it couldn’t do a good job of doing it, so to speak.
I don’t know why, but the second half of Owari no Seraph feels somehow different to the first half. It’s not in any way worse (or better), just… different, and in a way I can’t quite put my finger on.
Finally, this time last week I was at MCM Expo. And at the end of that I went to watch the Love Live! film which was being shown at The Crystal. Which was a great experience (and well worth being the subject of my first cinema trip — or, more correctly, public showing of a film — in a decade or so). I thoroughly enjoyed the franchise from start to finish. Great characters, with great interactions, great comedy, great music and, most importantly of all, great fun.
