Weekly watching roundup – Autumn 2015 Week 13

Literally every anime watched this week was on the same day. The rest of the time has been spent on various other things. So there were very few episodes watched this week, but nevertheless there were quite a few series that I finished as everything I watched any of I also completed.

Episodes watched in the past week:

Fushigi na Somera-chan was, in a word, menoussoue-like. As in, utterly bizarre, random and inexplicable. But funny for it.

Hacka Doll and Onsen Yousei Hakone-chan were both a few minutes of fun a week. That’s as much as can be said for either, but that’s also quite enough for me.

One Punch Man was… meh. Forgettable characters, battles which were eah less engaging than the last (the final one is probably the most boring fight I have ever seen in any anime) and a setting and concept with really limited potential. I had sort of hoped that the series would excel and take off but instead it just drifted away constantly in the wrong direction. The humour, of course, was the saving grace, but the gaps between the jokes got wider and wider as the series went on.

Shomin Sample was a good fun series but not much more than that. The only thing that makes me want more of it is wondering how Eri gets into the actual storyline, as she inevitably will do at some point (if she wasn’t going to then they wouldn’t keep giving her cameo appearances…)

Owari no Seraph – I really don’t like the direction that the final episode took. Which is a shame because it had been quite enjoyable up to that point. Indeed this was suffiient to kill any interest in buying the manga or indeed anything else related to the series.

I absolutely loved the romance between Stella and Ikki in Rakudai Kishi no Cavalry, although taken individually I actually think Alice was the best of the main characters from the series. Some of the fights were absolutely brilliant as well. I will certainly be getting the light novels of this one at some point soon. With the current 2nd, 4th and 5th place all having been finished, and being near the end of most of the other good series, it’s very likely that this will end up being my AOTS.

I don’t really know what to make of Komori-san ga Kotowarenai! There was nothing really to it, in any way, and I won’t even look into the manga that it’s based on from that, yet it was worth watching at the length it was. I guess that’s a fairly common situation for shorts.

Yuru Yuri the ending was a bit of a dud in my opinion. I was wanting something a bit… funnier. The series as a whole was great though.

Gakusen Toshi Asterisk – So you have these two great characters, and have them form a pair together to fight their way through a tournament. And then you go and put the focus of the series on a completely different pair. But we all know that Saya and Kirin are the real main pair of the series, right? I will continue watching in the second half and will be buying the light novels in English when they come out.

Teekyuu continues to be Teekyuu. There’s not really a lot left to be said about this one.

Weekly watching roundup – Autumn 2015 Week 11

The beginning of the end of the final season of the year. This week I caught up with a whole load of series, watching a lot of episodes from individual things, but I’ll leave the write ups for the most part until next week when most of them should be finished – except for Lance N’ Masques which is finished already.

Incidentally, next week’s roundup post may be a day late as I won’t be at home on either Christmas day or Boxing day.

As expected, the more recent arc of Noragami hasn’t lived up to the standards of the Bishamon one. It’s not that it’s bad, but rather that it is back to the level that the first series was at. Things are tight enough at the top that this has had a significant impact on the rankings.

Lance N’ Masques became the first of this season’s anime to be completed, on Thursday evening. I love the humour style of this series and it is that humour, along with the cast, that made me grow to love this series. Nonetheless it was the last episode, which was also the only one where the humour was absent, which in my opinion was the best episode of the entire series (although this didn’t prevent it getting leapfrogged by Rakudai… more on that next week). It’s also the best ending of a TV anime adaptation of a light novel series that I have seen in a long time. It’s not the ending of the series for me, though, as I have ordered the first two light novels from honto and they’ll be arriving some time in January.

Rakudai Kishi no Cavalry got off to a rather questionable start, but by about halfway through the first episode it was looking good, and from what I’ve seen so far it’s just gone upwards from there.

I had heard people praising the Bishamon arc of Noragami while the first series was airing. Now I know why. The only issue is, now that’s over can the series hold on to the standard of that arc or will things go back down to the level of the first season, or possibly lower still?

Gochiusa seems to be on the up as well, while Muco wasn’t as funny this week as previously.

I’ve had a tiring and stressful week this week. I managed to watch more anime than I had anticipated, but two thirds of that was all on the same day (yesterday). That week is over now, though.

Most things are continuing in much the same vein as they had been previously, so there’s not all that much to say.

Note: the rest of this article contains spoilers related to Comet Lucifer episode 2, which is why I’ve put it behind a “read more” tag.

I got around to starting Noragami and Heavy Object this week. Heavy Object seems decent but the early parts of Noragami’s second season blew me away slightly. I don’t remember the first one being as good as this? Anyway, it kept me watching until I had run out of episodes to watch – even though there was something else that I was supposed to be doing at the time.

I really don’t know what I’m doing with those rankings now. A month into the season, and a third of the way through several series, and I still don’t have a clue what the order really is.

Shingeki! Kyojin Chuugakkou became the second drop of the season. It felt far too incongruous to me – well beyond the realm of parody and into the land of original story with completely original characters that have a very slight resemblence to the characters from Attack on Titan, which resides mostly in their appearance. The result being something that felt incongruous, and given that even taken as its own separate story it didn’t seem worth watching, I decided to drop it.

Something which (to my slight surprise) I didn’t drop, is Shomin Sample. I’m not a fan of the typical ojou-sama character type, so the idea of this was about as unappealing as they come without being not worth the bother. Yet of the characters introduced so far, I only dislike one of them, which is something I have been okay with before and can be again. The humour is pretty decent, too, though I can’t help but look beyond the comedy and think about the actual implications of what is going on… which only serves to make the series more interesting still. So yes, this is a definite keep. For now, at least. Episode 2 should be available for free users by now but this is Animax so it isn’t.

The other series on Animax that I started this week was Dance with Devils. I’m not so confident on this one but it made a reasonable enough start. Is this some sort of musical? I’ll be trying out Heavy Object and starting season 2 of Noragami over the next few days so I can get ep 1 while they’re still free. Valkyrie Drive episode 2 went up for free but not episode 1, in true Animax style, so I’m leaving that for now. I might get a month’s subscription later in the season if I’m still following stuff on there then and if so I’ll watch the series then.

I also started Taimadou Gakuen 35 Shiken Shoutai this week, which is on Crunchyroll. Which feels like a shame. You can tell that the series is a great one. Good enough that it could be runaway AOTS material (and possibly even a contender for AOTY) if the anime adaptation was done well. Which it isn’t. This is one of the most obviously rushed series I’ve ever come across. And it’s pretty obvious that some of the stuff that is being skipped over is important as well, not necessarily for the overarching plot as for the characterisation and… well, for the context of other conversations that are left in the story, orphaned into appearing to make little sense. I’ve half a mind to just drop this and get the light novels, although the series itself is enjoyable despite the massive flaws. Either way I’m pretty sure that I’ll be buying this series in my next order, so long as its available. So I guess the anime has done its job for me… It’s just a shame it couldn’t do a good job of doing it, so to speak.

I don’t know why, but the second half of Owari no Seraph feels somehow different to the first half. It’s not in any way worse (or better), just… different, and in a way I can’t quite put my finger on.

Finally, this time last week I was at MCM Expo. And at the end of that I went to watch the Love Live! film which was being shown at The Crystal. Which was a great experience (and well worth being the subject of my first cinema trip — or, more correctly, public showing of a film — in a decade or so). I thoroughly enjoyed the franchise from start to finish. Great characters, with great interactions, great comedy, great music and, most importantly of all, great fun.

This really is the season of short comedies. Episode 3 of Somera-chan was just great, and that was the weakest one up to now. Itoshi no Muco is always brilliant.

In fact, more than the season of comedies it’s the season of light-hearted fun. Or maybe it’s just that those are the things that I’ve picked up so far. Speaking of which Animax have got hold of a whole load of things this season and say they’ll be up within a day of the Japanese broadcast. We’ll have to see about that, but if it is actually true then I’ll stop ignoring their existence again. I’m holding off on these series until they show up, as a result. This makes up 6 of the 12 series I have yet to start.

Still only one series dropped so far.
