Weekly Anime Roundup – Summer 2015 Week 13 (sort of) Final Week

It’s been one of those weeks – a busy weekend followed by a week of not feeling very well means not much anime has been watched. Oh well, if there was going to be a week where that happened then this would be the one I would want it to be at least, what with the lack of new episodes airing.

That said, having not finished either all of Spring nor all of Summer I can’t really do a final post for either. I’m not entirely sure I ever will, though, so you’ll just have to treat this as the final for Summer.

Episodes watched in the past week:

Summer 2015 (more-or-less) Final Status:

Series rankings at present:
1. Non Non Biyori Repeat
2. Rokka no Yuusha
3. Joukamachi no Dandelion (up 1)
4. Gakkou Gurashi! (down 1)
5. Himouto! Umaru-chan
6. Gate: Jieitai Kanochi nite, Kaku Tatakaeri
7. Overlord
8. Sore ga Seiyuu (up 1)

10. Shimoneta to Iu Gainan ga Sonzai Shinai Taikutsu na Sekai
11. Teekyuu 5
12. Danchigai
13. Million Doll (up 1)

Charlotte has been removed from the rankings due to an insufficient number of episodes watched.

Dropped:
Gangsta.

Gangsta., well, just isn’t my kind of series. The first episode was surprisingly captivating, so I kept going with it for a while, but after that it just faded away and bored me stiff. That is the reason why it was dropped, and also the reason why I only watched episode 3 this week.

Gakkou Gurashi! (or is it Gakkougurashi!?) got off to a great start, and each of the continuous reveals of the series managed to get me more and more captivated. With that said, later episodes dropped the ball a bit, with reveals of “shit that was like that all along” being replaced at times with “hey we found this thing for no apparent reason just as it became hugely important for us to have it”. That is being rather harsh, though, and the series was good from start to finish. I will be getting the manga of this one.

Umaru-chan’S is just a little sketch parody extra, doing what little sketch parody extras usually do – provide solid and underappreciated entertainment.

Wakaba*Girl – a good bit of fun, and I wish there was more to it. Not much else to say than that. I’m on the fence about buying the manga.

Overlord managed to be both better and worse than I had expected. In other words, it started out as something very different to what I had assumed it was iven the synopsis, which I wasn’t sure I liked that much, although I certainly liked it enough to keep going. As it went along, though, I grew more attached to the series, and as it started to develop it gradually shifted towards my original expectations, as well as shifting where my current expectations for the series were. Worth a watch, though, and I’ll get my hands on the novels sooner or later.

I’m still not sure whether or not I will finish Sore ga Seiyuu. If I do drop it, it will be purely down to fansub rule.

Weekly Anime Roundup – Summer 2015 Week 12

Another day, another blog post.

As I said last week, the season is now almost over. There are only a few episodes left to air now, and over the course of this week I’ve finished a significant proportion of the season’s anime.

This is a long post so I’ve put a cut off in after the episodes watched list. The rest of the post is still there, of course.

Overlord – at first I felt slightly uncomfortable with it, and I’m not entirely sure why. Usually I can tell these things, even when it isn’t of any significance, but this time I couldn’t work it out. Perhaps because it felt like the series hadn’t really started yet – after all, as it went on this feeling gradually faded and I grew to gradually like what I was watching. That’s yet another good series this season.

Rokka no Yuusha is coming together brilliantly. And the last episode is out this evening.

Gakkou Gurashi!’s ending, on the other hand, is looking like being less efective. Perhaps because they’re evidently trying to put a conclusive ending on something that hasn’t finished yet.

Million Doll seems to be attempting to pull something together after the odd chaos of the earlier parts of the series. But it’s, quite literally, too little too late. They dont have enough time left, however they orchestrate it, in order to pull off something satisfactory. Which is a shame as I would have liked to see it end well.

Now it’s time for the season to wind down. Joukamachi has already ended, although viewster doesn’t have the final episode up yet. Gate has ended, although I haven’t finished it yet. Rokka no Yuusha ends later today. Indeed the only things that I am currently watching actively that won’t have ended yet by next week’s post are Umaru-chan’S and Overlord.
After that it’ll be time to finish off series that I’ve been holding back on, time to look ahead to the next season, and time to make a whole load of blog posts…

Brilliant episode of Joukamachi this week. I’m loving this series. I’ll pick up the manga at some point, too.

Gakkou Gurashi felt so much like the calm before the storm. And the storm could be big indeed…

From what little I’ve watched of it so far, Gangsta seems to be better than the sum of its parts. But then that isn’t really saying much. Once I get back I’ll probably watch more of the things that I have fallen behind on. I’ve been deliberately leaving Charlotte up until now as I think it will probably be something best watched over a fairly short time period, but when I get back it will be just 2 weeks before it ends, so… It’ll also be the last week for picking stuff up before they stop counting as airing watches.

Not all is good with the world, though and the quirkiness in Bikini Warriors had faded with every episode since the first. A shame, but it probably never had more potential to begin with.

Danchigai’s episode this week was the weekest yet as well. Not enough Satsuki.

What a feast this season is turning out to be. Non Non, Rokka no Yuusha, Gakkou Gurashi, Himouto and Gate are all series that I’ve kept or caught up with over the past couple of weeks, and all are series that I’ve been thoroughly enjoying. I wonder if there are more out there that I haven’t got into yet that will reach similar levels.

Apparently the manga version of Gate is a gorefest? If anyone knows whether or not the light novels are the same I’d be interested to hear. If not, I’ll probably look into it myself. I’d rather not buy something like that, but I want to buy this series…

The other series I mentioned above are all definite to-gets.

Danchigai is becoming thoroughly enjoyable, too. This is largely thanks to Satsuki, who is a definite candidate for best character of the season.

I’ve been going through and enjoying Working!! as well, but I don’t think I’ll catch up to the currently airing one before it finishes.

For every upside, though, there is also a down.

Suzakinishi… Yeah. It was never anything much. And it never got anything more.

Aoharu x Kikanjuu was probably as much a case of me not feeling like watching it at the time than anything else, although I wasn’t particularly enjoying it anyway.

Prison School was… uncomfortable. I couldn’t even make it to the start of the main story. Disliked the characters and the setting and the way things were going. That’s as far as it goes, though – just dislike rather than outright loathing which it could have been.

Kurayami Santa – yeah, that series just has nothing going for it if you’re not only watching it for the nostalgia factor of the animation. Even then it’s probably best to watch with both sounds and subtitles turned off to minimalise how much younotice how lacking it is

Gakkou Gurashi episode 4 was just… wow. Powerful stuff.

Danchigai is starting to grow on me. Satsuki in particular. (Lar!). And thus, obviously, the Satsuki-focused episode was the best one yet.

Incidentally, we have Wakaba*Girl where every episode is “xth leaf”, and Danchigai where every episode is “house x”

Those rankings don’t exactly show the reality of the situation – everything in the top 8 is actually rather close, but then there’s a huge gap between 8th and 9th. There are also some series on there with just a single watched episode, which is never reliable. Himouto! Umaru-chan S is not going on the rankings.

Charlotte – he wasn’t exactly doing a good job at hiding his ability was he? Almost as though he wanted to be found out… Honestly, though, from the first episode that guy seemed like a total jerk, and I spent most of the time wanting him to get caught out and lose everything. It sort of happened, I guess.

Million Doll – It looked at first as though this series would join the “unexpectedly good” group, but I’m having a bit of difficulty keeping

Danchigai’s second episode was better than the first. But it was better than the third as well.

Teekyuu – “It’s a horse!” “Woof Woof”. Says it all, really.

I finally got around to watching Non Non episode 2 just a few minutes before the next one was up. I haven’t watched episode 3 yet, either. Rather a contrast from last time when I was always eager to watch it as soon as possible. I’m still loving the series, though.

Ushio to Tora – well, what can I say? Every single one of the characters managed to annoy me. The main character, the dad, both the girls, the monster, even the random classmates with no names. No way can I watch something like that.

Miss Monochrome worked so much better with shorter episodes. It barely even feels like a gag comedy anymore. A shame.

Makura no Danshi’s second episode wasn’t entertaining in any way, and I couldn’t come up with a character to make it that way (the best I could do was to imagine that he was talking to himself and the whole thing was a “rehearsal” for what would inevitably become a failed attempt at chatting up a girl). There weren’t even any pillows this time.

Classroom Crisis – tech-gobbledegook-exposition after tech-gobbledegook-exposition about non-existant technology, none of which is even remotely relevant to the actual story. Get rid of that and the completely pointless space setting and it might have been worth watching. As it is? Not even close – it’s Sci-Fi of the worst possible kind.

There were quite a few series which I got a different level of enjoyment out of than I had expected. Some in a good way, some bad.

Whilst, as I said last week, it was disappointing that Wakaba*Girl was as short as it was, that doesn’t mean that short series are inherently inferior. Indeed, there are some series that, for one reason or another, work better as shorts. Bikini Warriors is one of these. For a series that I had expected to drop within seconds, the actual result was a very pleasant surprise. I like parodies and series that make fun of themselves, and this is one that fits nicely into this category. That said, I’m remaining cautious as there’s no way to tell if the series will keep up what it has done so far.

Sore ga Seiyuu was, of course, a pleasant surprise. I had thought that there was a chance that this series could be good, but I hadn’t expected it to have the most enjoyable first episode so far. I’m not really the type who follow seiyuu or even pays attention to who is voicing which character (as this breaks me away from my immersion in the series), but nonetheless I found this series to be a mixture of a good fun series and a source of information of which I had previously had only fragmentary knowledge.

Himouto! Umaru-chan was another one with a great first episode and…

…If I stick with this pace of writing I’ll still be here at nightfall, so I’m going to skip over most of the rest, sorry. I should have written these out as I was watching, rather than trying to put everything together at the end of the week.

However, for those series which I dropped, there will be no further opportunity to talk about them.

Wakako-Zake there actually isn’t much to talk about. Series about food only work if they make you want to try the food yourself – even in situations where the food doesn’t actually exist. This one did not do this in the slightest. Combine that with an uncanny-valley tier design of the main character, and the fact that I really dislike drunken behaviour and you have a recipe for a quick drop with no need to even think about it. Which is what happened here.

Chaos Dragon, on the other hand… The episode started off clumsily done but showing signs of promise to come later in the series. Right up until a certain point, at which it launched itself into a freefall akin to that of a solo skydiver who thinks parachutes are for wimps. When an antagonist with a clear and definite objective (and who is clearly in control of the situation) makes decisions that are both counterintuitive for their immediate situation and obviously actively hinder their chances of getting what they want. When a character sets one objective and in doing so ends up doing the opposite to the extent of… well, I don’t really want to say in case there are people who are somehow looking forward to this. Where there is evidently an attempt at a clash of multiple sides each with their own objectives but half of them are not explained and the other half seem to be doing everything they possibly can to hinder their own objectives. Then you know that a series isn’t worth watching.

On a side note, Makura no Danshi, which honestly would have been slightly creepy if I had watched it the way it was intended (i.e. with the sole character talking to me with those sickeningly soppy lines and eyes that stare right into you – which might be a good thing from someone you love but is downright disturbing from a character you know nothing about and who you’ve never encountered before), ended up being rather amusing by instead imagining that the boy was some kuso-teitoku trying to seduce his Akebono into sleeping with him (and, of course, coming up with her reactions). This scenario worked a surprisingly long way into the episode…

Okusama ga Seitokaichou! – in the early stages of the episode I thought it wasn’t going to be as explicit as the fact that CR had a censored and uncensored version on the site would imply. It turned out I was wrong. Honestly that’s probably the closest thing to a hentai I’ve ever watched.

Classroom☆Crisis was boring. Just plain boring. I’m going to try watching the second episode to see if anything attracts my interest, but this one probably won’t last. With a setting that doesn’t interest me, full of meaningless details that for the most part do nothing to expand either the world, the setting or the plot, and characters that are completely uninteresting, this seems to be the ultimate in mediocrity.

Wakaba*Girl, in contrast, was a good fun series with good characters and good comedy. I just wish it weren’t a short.
