2017 in retrospect: A few personal yearly top 10s

As with last year, eligibility is determined by when I first encountered the thing in question, not when the series started.

The relatively few new things this year means that some of the awards have relatively low thresholds to get on. It also means I’ve skipped out on a few sections. That and the fact that some data has disappeared due to computer troubles over the course of this year and I’m either unable or unwilling to get it back.

Top 10 new female characters:

10. Kusanagi Yuma (Soushin Shoujo Matoi)
9. Kouro Hotaru (Black Bullet)
8. Kanna Kamui (Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon)
7. Kokonoe Yae (Isekai wa Smartphone to Tomo ni)
6. Kaneshiro Sora (Tenshi no 3P!)
5. Re=L Rayford (Rokudenashi Majutsu Koushi to Akashic Records)
4. Toriumi Sakura (Tenshi no 3P!)
3. Nephren Ruq Insania (Shuumatsu Nani Shitemasu ka? Isogashii Desu ka? Sukutte Moratte Ii Desu ka?)
2. Satanichia Kurumizawa McDowell (Gabriel DropOut)
1. Nina Alexandrovna (Hina Logi: From Luck & Logic)

Top 10 new male characters:

10. Kamisama (Isekai wa Smartphone to Tomo ni)
9. Halter Vainney (Clockwork Planet)
8. Sasajima Gakuto (Nana Maru San Batsu)
7. Goblin Slayer (Goblin Slayer)
6. Riku Dola (No Game No Life)
5. Fafnir (Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon)
4. Kashimura Zouroku (Alice to Zouroku)
3. Ayanokouji Kiyotaka (Youkoso Jitsuryoku Shijou Shugi no Kyoushitsu e)
2. Heine Wittgenstein (Oushitsu Kyoushi Haine)
1. Glenn Radars (Rokudenashi Majutsu Koushi to Akashic Records)

And back down to zero male characters in the top 10 overall. Only 2 in the top 20 in fact.

Top 10 pleasant surprises (anime only):
This is a list for series that most exceeded what I expected from them. Thus low expectations are as important as high results.

10. Eromanga-sensei
9. Shuumatsu Nani Shitemasu ka? Isogashii desu ka? Sukutte Moratte Ii desu ka?
8. Princess Principal
7. Akiba’s Trip The Animation
6. Youkoso Jitsuryoku Shijou Shugi no Kyoushitsu e (TV)
5. Soushin Shoujo Matoi
4. Rokudenashi Majutsu Koushi to Akashic Records
3. Isekai Shokudou
2. Hina Logi: From Luck & Logic
1. Kemono Friends

Of course Kemono Friends is top of this list.

No drop rankings this year due to some key data having been lost.

Top 10 new manga/light novels:
Series are not counted as read if I am less than 20 pages in.

I did quite a lot of reading comparatively this year, but it was mostly reading stuff that I had already started in previous years. When there are only 9 new things between both manga and light novels, why separate them? There are no manga adaptations of light novels (or vice versa) on the list, but I marked the manga entries anyway to make it clearer.

9. Psycome
8. Anne Happy♪ (manga)
7. Mahou Shoujo Ikusei Keikaku
6. ReLIFE (manga)
5. Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica: Homura’s Revenge (manga)
4. Goblin Slayer
3. Gakusen Toshi Asterisk
2. Rokka no Yuusha
1. Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo!

Top 10 new anime:
Sequels excluded.

10. Hina Logi: From Luck & Logic
9. Tenshi no 3P!
8. Isekai Shokudou (AOTS Summer 2017)
7. Schoolgirl Strikers: Animation Channel
6. Soushin Shoujo Matoi
5. Gabriel DropOut
4. Youjo Senki
3. Kemono Friends (AOTS Winter 2017)
2. Rokudenashi Majutsu Koushi to Akashic Records
1. Shuumatsu Nani Shitemasu ka? Isogashii Desu ka? Sukutte Moratte Ii Desu ka? (AOTS Spring 2017)

There is no AOTS for Autumn 2017 as I didn’t watch any Autumn anime.

2016 in retrospect: A few personal yearly top 10s

As with last year, eligibility is determined by when I first encountered the thing in question, not when the series started. Unlike previously, though, OPs and EDs are determined by when I first watched the anime that they are in rather than when I first heard the song.

2015 in retrospect: A few personal yearly top 10s

Well this was supposed to be posted early last week but it took far longer than I had thought… I should probably start writing it up sooner next year, or maybe keep track of more things than just the drop point throughout the course of the year.

As with last year, eligibility is determined by when I first encountered the thing in question, not when the series started.

Inou Twintail wa Yuusha de Aru

No it isn’t some weird new series (I wonder what such a series would be like) but a Japan manga and light novel order (from honto.jp) placed on 6th January 2015.

First Japanese order of the new year. A lot of this order is not immediately available… I wonder how much of it won’t end up getting shipped. Whatever doesn’t will just get placed in the next order. Not quite balanced between Light novels and manga this time, unlike usual.

Light novels:
Inou-Battle wa Nichijou-kei no Naka de 2-9
Ore, Twintail ni Narimasu 8
Washio Sumi wa Yuusha de Aru
Machine-Doll wa Kizutsukanai 4

Manga:
Nukoduke! 3
Zettai Reiiki 8-9 END (*sniffle*)
Soredemo Sekai wa Utsukushii 3
Kami Nomi zo Shiru Sekai 25-26 END
Morita-san wa Mukuchi 9
Aizawa-san Zoushoku 1
Sakura Trick 3

Manga and Light Novel order from Japan (honto.jp) – 10th December 2014

Last order of the year. Everything should ship within 3 days, but I still don’t expect to actually receive this until probably the first week of 2015, what with the Christmas period making postal deliveries slower. Unfortunately, the latest volume of Nukoduke! is currently OOS so that will have to wait until next time. Everything else I tried was in stock, though, and I managed to fill in a few awkward gaps in my collection.

Light novels:
Aoi Haruno Subete 2
Hanbun no Tsuki ga Noboru Sora 3-4
Inou-Battle wa Nichijou-kei no Naka de 1
Ore, Twintail ni Narimasu 1-3
Rokujouma no Shinryakusha!? 4
Strike the Blood 3
Tsurugi no Joou to Rakuin no Ko 3

Manga:
Hanayamata 4
Isshuukan Friends 1-2
Kitakubu Katsudou Kiroku 4-5 END
Mikakunin de Shinkoukei 4
Miyakawa-ke no Kuufuku 1
Teekyuu 3
Yama no Susume 6
Zettai Reiiki 7

Total cost = 9227 yen (£49.34) plus shipping for 20 books.
Admittedly that does include over 2000 yen saved in points used. I should get about 800 more from this order.

Manga and Light Novel order from Japan (honto.jp) – 18th October 2014

Double-sized order this time, although it’s likely to be the last for a while now. Quite a few of the items are 7-21 day availability and as such the order is likely to not be dispatched for a while, and some of the items may not ship at all. This is already my second attempt at ordering 7-byougo no Sakata-san to, Ore vol. 4

Light novels:
7-byougo no Sakata-san to, Ore 4 END
Ore, Twintail ni Narimasu 4-7 (vols 1-3 currently not available to order)
Hitsugi no Chaika 4
Lucky Chance 5-7
Tokage no Ou 2
GJ-bu Chuutoubu 2
Rokujouma no Shinryakusha!? 2-3
Jinsei 2
Kamisama no Inai Nichiyoubi 2-3
Saenai Heroine no Sodatekata 4
Biblia Koshodou no Jiken Techou 2
Wakamurasaki (Hikaru ga Chikyuu ni Ita Koro…… 3)
Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Comedy wa Machigatteiru 6

Manga:
Saki 13
Kami Nomi zo Shiru Sekai 23-24
Yuru Yuri 12
Tasogare Otome x Amnesia 8-10 END
Morita-san wa Mukuchi 8
Mikakunin de Shinkoukei 2-3
Shinohayu: the dawn of age 2
Rakka Ryusui 2-3
Yama no Susume 4-5
Hanayamata 2-3
Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun 2-3
Soredemo Sekai wa Utsukushii 2

Total cost = 24034 yen (£172) + shipping, for 40 books.

Here’s hoping that I actually get the 10x points (I can’t quite be sure from reading the email, but that’s probably just my slight lack of understanding. I think it’s saying you get points if you order within the stated time period, rathre than if it ships then). It could save me about 2000 yen off the next order. Which would be nice.
